Covid-19 has further exposed how social determinants of health, such as housing, are crucial in shaping access to health care – and how housing insecurity can leave large portions of the population vulnerable to the disease. Tens of thousands of Californians bounce from one place to another, living in overcrowded, often substandard housing in impoverished neighborhoods, living in cars – or on the streets. The pandemic has forced those experiencing housing insecurity to shelter in place without a home, or in overcrowded housing where they cannot self-isolate or practice safe social distancing. Now, the economic downturn and loss of jobs means more people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent – putting them at risk of losing their homes and further complicating public health efforts.
Join POLITICO on Wednesday, July 22 at 1 PM EDT / 10 AM PDT, for a virtual deep-dive conversation on the role social determinants of health, specifically housing, will have in post-Covid-19 recovery efforts in California.
